We were so happy to see familiar faces among the crowd and insanity. To say the least... we did not fit into the whole Vegas thing.

Don’t get me wrong, we had a great time, just not with anything that Vegas had to offer. It was a wonderful trip for a few reasons: One: we got to hang with Ryan and Kelly Portnoy, our bestest photo friends and mentors (Kellan Studios: They’re “the truth”). ... Three: we got to meet unbelievably talented professional photographers who were honest and real with us. ... Folks like: Punam and Andy Bean, and of course, Ryan and Kelly Portnoy. Others, we got to listen and learn from like: Cliff Mautner and Joe McNally. And some we had the pleasure of just laughing way too loud with like, Dan Portnoy, Ryan’s brother and our Las Vegas FUN Guide... thanks, Dan.

...This, in the above photo is the famed fountains of the Bellagio and much more importantly and interestingly, with arms spread in “jubilee”, is the legendary Dan Portnoy. I don’t know how many games of “Would You Rather” we played throughout the three days together. ( I have a post in the works just for that... soon.) And, of course, we’ll have a post about our Arizona photo shoot with Kellan Studios

... We’re so happy to be home, excited at what’s ahead and thrilled at what Emblem is shaping into.

Mat and Roz, Plethora Finis

An apology is on the tip of my tongue, however, I think I will swallow it, here’s why: I was going to apologize for not posting as frequently as we all would like. ... We are enjoying this stage of things, and enjoying it at the generous mentorship of so many, whether they realize their role or not. I will write on all this later, but for now, let’s get on with this wedding.

...This wedding strolls through our mind with the crisp fresh fall air of Ottawa’s ByWard Market. We fell in love with Ottawa immediately, my brother’s fond memories of this past home of his, linking with a sudden awareness and vibrant agreement. ... I am getting buried in memory here and need to focus on the task at hand.

... Okay, Mat and Roz’s wedding was building a fabulous momentum at this point. ... The ceremony was romantically warmed by the early afternoon light of fall, leaning through the aged stained glass and finding ample room to lift into the historic space of St. ... The wedding party and we, the eager photographers, climbed into a street car and loitered through downtown Ottawa. If downtown Ottawa is anything, it’s historic and we went from the University to Parliament Hill and just about everything in between, Rideau Street, the Rideau Canal, the Chateau Laurier Hotel... awesome.

...The food was beautiful, the atmosphere was gleefully content, emotional and sincere, hilarious and all in all an awesome party, the best party we’ve been at yet. We couldn’t be coerced into joining the fun until our batteries were all dead and our memory cards were all full. ... We left the laughter, the dancing, the celebration and walked into the cool night and the busy streets of one a.m. and strolled with content grins back to our hotel. We spent the next morning with Mat and Roz and a handful of family and friends sharing brunch.

Mat and Roz, Plethora Part Two

So, the morning of the wedding started early for us, we were out the hotel at 7:30 am. I tagged along on the golf course as the guys took up an early round of the back nine, it was a little crisp but we had a lot of fun. I think the guys were thrown off by having a camera in their face as they tried to play but after a while I think they started to like it.

Christy was off with the ladies to get with the primping. And of course, lounging in a salon is hard work, she even got to have some of her favorite tea, which has been, until recently, infamously elusive. She had to get her hair done to find it again and she wasn’t leaving the place until she had a box of the stuff: Aveda Comforting Tea. Anyhow, the morning was awesome and there was SO much more yet to come. Thankfully we were able to grab some eats before the ceremony, I filled up on pizza in the hotel room as the guys tried to figure out how to tie ties. I soon had them all educated on the single and double windsor and we were all pizza faced watching Friday Night Lights. Then it was time, cramped elevator, cramped car, sweaty palmed in the stuffy church, pinned the flowers, waited, waited and then... down the aisle.

We miss the rest of the family out in Alberta and thanks to Skype we were able to wish them all a Merry Christmas looking into their beaming faces.

Hopefully, we will have some time later to post about the holidays, for now, we are taking the moment to post about a very special wedding we did back in October.

We had the wonderful opportunity and privilege of flying out to Ottawa to photograph the wedding of Mat and Roz. Roz had seen our work on the internet about a year ago, probably on our blog at that time and emailed us to see if we were interested. At first, we couldn’t believe that someone was legitimately interested in flying us across two provinces to photograph their wedding. ... As soon as we met them we felt welcome and all the more thrilled to be a part of their day.

...We were with them through rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, golfing, getting ready, pizza and Friday Night Lights, ceremony, street car, Parliament Hill, reception till 1:30 am, and brunch Sunday morning in their suite. ... Ottawa, for us, was such an adventure and we look back at it and these people with fondness.

...I know Lethbridge isn’t as “urbanly vibrant” as Ottawa but, none the less, we would love to have you out, maybe for a horseback ride in the foothills of the Rockies, walk through the mountain village of Waterton and get lost in the towering hoodoos of Writing on Stone National Park. ... Anyhow, thank you, Mat and Roz, for giving us such a wonderful opportunity to not only explore Ottawa and Montreal, photograph your wedding in one of the most artistic cities in Canada, but to meet you and your generous family.

... Because we got to spend so much time with Mat and Roz, more than any other couple we’ve photographed, we were able to capture so much of their story, so much of their relationships it’s almost impossible for us to be so stingy with the amount of photos that we post. We have to do the story justice so we’ll post what we need to... we need to post a plethora... and that’s what we’ll do, in two posts if we have to.

...There aren’t ever any photos of us but we were just grinning with a camera stuck to our face all day.

First one in my life, by the way and let me add that in 32 hours of driving I was unknowingly speeding for 8 seconds and I get nailed, talk about justice.

...My brother from another mother, Brad agreed to saddle up and go with me and I am sure happy he did. The trip was an adventure and I am so stoked that he was there to share it with me and keep me awake and sane. ... We stopped to stand in awe of the huge star lit sky and were spooked by the ghostly bugle of a bull elk eerily echoing through the black. The obvious peril of lurking wherewolves and hitchhiking serial killers sent us into a sprint back to the Pontiac and a very necessary peel out.

...Just as soon as sleep found us it bolted out our flimsy tent at the crashing crescendo of coyotes howling and yelping.

...I don’t know if it was our pathetic appearance or that we wanted to pay for one dollar coffees with our debit card.

...We stepped into the wind and took advantage of arriving way too early and explored the phenomenal course soaking in every spectacular photo op. As staff arrived on the course we discovered that we needed to obtain a “media vest” or we would have to be confined to the spectator areas, roped off jails imprisoning all creativity and art. Until our saviour, Andrew from Rayne Longboards arrived to bail us out, we were convinced the trip was a total wash. But through the hard work and generous hospitality of Andrew and Graham of Rayne Longboards and Eric of Silverfish Longboarding we were granted complete creative freedom.

...Thankfully the rattle snake I almost stepped on was kind enough to let me continue the hiking without puting two holes in my ankle. ... It was a pleasure to see “Scoots” defend his title in a streak of uncontested green and Brianne bewilder the competition yet again.

Rollin' with it...

Here are some photos from one of our summer weddings. This is Burton and Lisa and we had such a wonderful opportunity to photograph them in the Rocky Mountains. Fairmont, BC is so close to where I spent my rugrat years. It was like going home.

Burton and Lisa were awesome, they defined passion. I am sure it’s obvious.

We are at a full sprint and hopefully soon we can sit back and be couch ridden with severe postahrea. We will have posts for each wedding we have done this summer. So far, that’s four and we are off tomorrow to Canmore for yet another mountain wedding.

This is Mel and Jamie, two vibrantly generous people. This wedding was special to us because they were family. Mel is Christy’s cousin and this beautiful ceremony was at Christy’s Aunt Mick’s gorgeous country home. The “yard” was immaculate. The word “yard” does not do it justice, I am going to borrow from my english friends back home and refer to it as the “garden”, that describes it well. Aunt Mick’s garden was pristine, it was a beautifully natural setting, fresh, shimmering green, massive, vibrant blue sky, stretching, golden prairie. The ceremony really was a treasure, especially when you consider our location, but the hurricanes were down to a whisper and no ominous clouds in sight.

The big group of us were all over the city. Climbing over fences, through fields, down alleys, through fountains. It was a lot of fun and that was just the afternoon. As the evening quickly came upon us we rushed to the reception and carried on the party, and what a party it was.

Thank you Mel and Jamie, you were gracious hosts, eager and fun subjects, and we were thrilled to be a part of your day.

But despite the rain, Alissia and Travis kept on with the plan. The ceremony started perfectly but, of course, the rain came and sent the chairs wobbling as everyone raced for umbrellas, brave wedding party and pastor standing strong, unmoved.

The rain continued through the portraits, seemingly spoiling such incredible locations. But Alissia and Travis let it all come, let the day be what it was, it was theirs and they were married. It was difficult but it was beautifully memorable, completely unique. Perfect. You guys are awesome.

But we were able to thoroughly enjoy some great families this fall and have some fun outside. We are discovering the popular spots for other photographers in this town. On any given Saturday afternoon, venture down to the river bottom and you’ll easily find 3 or 4 different photographers scurrying about, cameras in hand and couples tripping through the grass and clambering through the giant legs of the bridge. Sometimes we feel so out of place, so amateur. But really, don’t we all have something to learn from each other? There is your emblem life lesson for the day... your welcome.
